헨리 나우웬 - 교회 안에 있으면서 교회의 사람은 되지 않기

 Being in the Church, Not of It

 

Often we hear the remark that we have to live in the world without being of the world. 

 

우리는 가끔, 세상 안에(in the world) 있으면서, 세상의(of the world) 사람은 되지 말라는 말을 듣는다.

 

But it may be more difficult to be in the Church without being of the Church.  

 

그러나 그보다, 교회 안에 있으면서 교회의 사람은 되지 않기가 훨씬 어려울 것이다.

 

Being of the Church means being so preoccupied by and involved in the many ecclesial affairs and clerical “ins and outs” that we are no longer focused on Jesus.

 

교회의 사람이 된다는 것은,  교회 업무와 목회자의 “이래라 저래라”에 사로잡혀서 더 이상 예수에게 눈길을 모으지 못하는 것을 의미한다.

 

The Church then blinds us from what we came to see and deafens us to  what we came to hear. 

 

그리 되면 교회가 우리 눈을 가려 보아야 할 것을 보지 못하게 하고,

우리 귀를 막아 들어야 할 것을 듣지 못하게 한다.

 

Still, it is in the Church that Christ dwells, invites us to his table, and speaks to us words of eternal love.

 

그래도,
그리스도가 거하시며 우리를 당신 식탁에 초대하시고

영원한 사랑을 말씀하시는 곳은 교회 ‘안’이다.

 

Being in the Church without being of it is a great spiritual challenge.

 

교회 안에 있으면서 교회의 사람은 되지 않는,
이것이야말로 우리가 해결해야 할 중대한 영적 도전이다
